Important announcement to all our current subscribers

We regret that, in view of the uncertain future status of the online database of Publishing, Books & Reading in Sub-Saharan Africa, we can no longer accept subscription orders or renewals to this resource.

Due to the specialist nature of the database and, as a result, the still relatively small number of subscribers, it has become increasingly apparent that its continuation is no longer commercially sustainable. We are currently in discussions with a number of parties regarding the possible transfer of the database to an institution in Africa or elsewhere, subsequently to be made freely available as an open access resource. In addition to maintaining and further developing the database, there will also be a need for more sophisticated software and moving the database to a more dynamic digital platform. There are currently several institutions who have expressed a positive or at least provisional interest in taking over the database, and more details about the move will be announced as soon as possible, and if and when our plans materialize.

Existing subscriptions to the database are/were valid for a period of two years from date of registration or re-registration. Online access expiry dates for customers whose subscription has expired, or is are shortly to expire, will be extended at no charge until 30 June 2015, and/or the date when the database is expected to migrate to a new host and becomes available as an open access resource. Until that time access via IP address recognition for libraries and institutions requiring their own authentication methods will continue to be possible via the IP address ranges customers have registered.

Meantime we will continue to update and expand the database until the end of 2014. However, there will be no further updates as from 2015 unless a new hosting institution can be found.
